Worldwide, there were about 85,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday, and more than 2,900 deaths. The vast majority of the deaths have been in China, but there have also been at least 29 deaths in Italy.
Colleges and universities across the state have recalled students from coronavirus hot spots such as Italy, and many have decided those students will be barred from campus or otherwise asked to isolate themselves for at least two weeks after they return to the U.S. Some of those students have already returned, and their campus ban or self-isolation has already begun.
But a spokesperson for the University of Connecticut said on Sunday that the state’s largest university hasn’t yet decided what to do with 88 students who have been summoned back from study-abroad programs in Florence and Perugia, Italy. UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in an email that the university was in discussions about a possible campus ban or self-isolation recommendation.
“Those are among the issues being discussed with the state and local health department as UConn and other institutions await specifics from the CDC on its plans involving travelers returning from Italy,” Reitz said. “We’re in active conversations to determine the most appropriate next steps.”
On Monday, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams will visit Connecticut. Adams and Gov. Ned Lamont will tour the Connecticut State Public Health Laboratory in Rocky Hill. They will be joined by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, state Department of Public Health Commissioner Renée D. Coleman Mitchell and other health officials.
